Trip to Italy
On January 2nd-11th members of CUDS traveled to Italy. The students along with advisor Mike Van Amburgh traveled to Rome, Parma, and Florence. In Parma they toured dairy farms, production facilities for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese as well as Parma hams (Prosciutto di Parma). The group also visited numerous dairy farms, vineyard, The University de Parma, and Chianina beef farms throughout Italy. In Rome they saw many national monuments including the coliseum, Vatican City, Spanish steps and the Trevi fountain. Everyone enjoyed experiencing the unique culture of Italy especially through eating many traditional meals. Some memorable foods included Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, Parma ham products, Chianina steak, wild boar and numerous wines. It was extremely educational, and to say the least entertaining.
Annual Harvest Sale
CUDS manages the New York Holstein Harvest Sale that is sponsored by the New York Holstein Association each fall. Students are in charge of all animal registration, washing, clipping, and sale day preparation of the animals as well as set up, execution and tear down for the sale. Every year the sale starts with a pie auction in which students auction off delicious pies they bake as a fundraiser for international trips. The club also takes donations of embryos and choice picks from cows and auction them off for profit in addition to commission from the sale. Overall the sale serves as a great way for students to bond as friends and to give back to the dairy industry, an industry in which most of the members grew up with. Producers and buyers from all of New England and the Upper Mid- West buy lots from the sale auctioneered by David Rama and the Cattle Exchange while pedigrees and catalogs are put together by the famous Horus Backous. CUDS members are anxious to begin taking care of the animals and the combination of Rama and Horus are sure to liven up the days of Fall in Ithaca.
Styles of Spring Semen Sale
The CUDS Styles of Spring Semen and Embryo Sale is a new fundraiser that has just been put into place this Spring. The Styles of Spring Sale will be an online auction run on BovineBid.com from April 16 through April 22. The sale is going to highlight 30 lots of embryos that have been donated or consigned from producers both young and old from the North East. Also included in the sale will be units of semen ranging from American Pie to Sanchez.
Trip to Germany
The seniors and juniors in CUDS spent their spring break touring dairies and acquiring knowledge of German culture. While there the students toured 7 dairies and many dairy related businesses including Forster-Technik (a producer of automatic calf feeders), GEA (milking technologies), Masterrind (an AI cooperative), and Nordmiclh (a milk processing plant). They also had an opportunity to learn the statistics of the German dairy industry. The average farm has 11 cows and the average cow produces around 7800 kg of milk a year. The majority of the farms and family owned and operated and because of the recent recession they have turned to biogas facilities to support their dairies. All of the biogas that is produced on the farms is sold to an electrical grid. There was also the opportunity to visit an East German dairy that will be remodeled, which gave the students a perspective on the changes that have occurred since the 1990s. Within the EU, Germany is the largest producer of milk.
There was also a lot of time for the students to experience the German culture. Many traditional German meals were arranged for the students to partake in and they had time to visit a castle as well as a day to sightsee in Berlin and visit a concentration camp.
Wine & Cheese Tasting
CUDS hosted the 1st annual wine and cheese tasting event in the Shops at Ithaca mall promoting local wineries and cheese producers. There was a baby calf for visitors to see and a milk mustache contest.
