"Poisonous" does not mean deadly. Some manifestations of toxicity are subtle. The dose, as always, determines if a plant is safe source of nutrients or a toxic hazard.

BRIEF: Is alfalfa toxic once frost hits?

QUESTION:
I'm in hopes that you can answer a nutritional question for me. I recall having read an article some time ago reporting that frost hit alfalfa might be toxic to horses. I will be moving my horses in mid October to a pasture that is partially alfalfa. Should this be of concern for my animals?

ANSWER:

I am not aware of a problem with frosted alfalfa per se, but some interesting and annoying molds grow on dying alfalfa, so maybe they experience problems from that? I guess it depends on the climate after the frost.
